God equips those whom he calls
The Christian life is not sustained by determination alone. The Holy Spirit dwells within the baptised, strengthens us in Confirmation and patiently forms us throughout life.
Isaiah describes the Spirit resting upon the promised Messiah. Christian tradition receives from this passage seven gifts that belong perfectly to Christ and are shared with his members by grace.
The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.Isaiah 11.2
How the gifts work
Grace received, practised and made fruitful
The gifts are not seven spiritual personalities or achievements. They work together as the Spirit draws a Christian into deeper communion with Christ.
Developed through response
Prayer, worship, Scripture, repentance, wise counsel and acts of love make us increasingly receptive to the Spirit.
Recognised by their fruit
True spiritual growth produces Christlike love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

1. Wisdom
Wisdom lets us see life in the light of God and desire what leads us towards him.
Teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. — Psalm 90.12

What this gift means
Wisdom is more than intelligence or accumulated experience. It is a loving knowledge of God that changes what we treasure. Wisdom helps us judge success, suffering, relationships and possessions in the light of our eternal calling.
Practising it
Before a decision, ask: Which choice draws me towards truth, love and communion with God? Make space for silence, Scripture and the perspective of faithful Christians.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Wisdom is not superiority, cleverness or always having an answer. The wise person remains humble, teachable and willing to listen.
Pray
Holy Spirit, give me wisdom to love what is lasting and to see every part of life in the light of Christ.
2. Understanding
Understanding opens the heart of the faith so that Christian truth becomes coherent, living and personal.
Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. — Luke 24.45

What this gift means
This gift does not mean that every mystery becomes easy. It helps us perceive how Scripture, the Creeds, the Sacraments and the Church’s teaching belong together around Jesus Christ.
Practising it
Read a short passage of Scripture slowly. Ask what it reveals about God, how it points to Christ and what response it invites. Bring questions rather than hiding them.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Understanding is not private interpretation detached from the Church, nor is it merely collecting religious facts.
Pray
Holy Spirit, open my mind and heart, that I may receive the truth of Christ and allow it to shape my life.
3. Counsel
Counsel forms sound judgement and helps us recognise what faithful love requires here and now.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119.105

What this gift means
Counsel is the Spirit’s help in practical discernment. It applies Christian truth to real choices where motives may be mixed, consequences uncertain and several good possibilities compete.
Practising it
Name the decision honestly. Pray without demanding a particular outcome. Test the options against Scripture, Christian teaching, responsibilities, likely consequences and trusted advice.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Counsel is not following every impulse that feels spiritual. Nor does it remove the need for evidence, professional expertise or safeguarding.
Pray
Holy Spirit, guide my choices. Free me from fear and self-deception, and lead me in the way of faithful love.
4. Fortitude
Fortitude gives courage and perseverance when following Christ is difficult, costly or unpopular.
God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. — 2 Timothy 1.7

What this gift means
Christian courage is not the absence of fear. Fortitude enables us to do what is right despite fear, resist pressure, endure hardship and begin again after failure.
Practising it
Identify one good action you have delayed through fear. Break it into a faithful next step, ask for prayer and act with appropriate support.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Fortitude is not aggression, recklessness or refusing help. Courage protects the vulnerable and accepts wise limits.
Pray
Holy Spirit, strengthen me to remain faithful in difficulty and to act with courage, patience and love.
5. Knowledge
Knowledge helps us recognise creation as God’s gift and understand ourselves truthfully within it.
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it. — Psalm 24.1

What this gift means
This gift teaches us to see created things neither as gods nor as possessions without purpose. People, work, bodies, nature, skill and material goods are received gratefully and used responsibly.
Practising it
Notice one created gift today. Give thanks, learn about it and ask how it should be used or protected for the good of others.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Knowledge is not contempt for the material world. Christian faith honours creation while refusing to make an idol of it.
Pray
Holy Spirit, teach me to know myself honestly and to receive creation with gratitude, restraint and care.
6. Piety
Piety awakens loving trust in God and a generous belonging within his family, the Church.
You have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit. — Romans 8.15–16

What this gift means
Piety is not simply a devotional style. It is the Spirit forming the relationship of a beloved child towards God: reverence, affection, trust and a desire to worship.
Practising it
Keep a simple daily appointment with God. Pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly, attend worship faithfully and perform one hidden act of love for another member of God’s family.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Piety is not religious display, sentimentality or judging those whose prayer looks different from ours.
Pray
Holy Spirit, deepen my love for the Father, unite me to Christ and teach me to pray with the whole Church.
7. Fear of the Lord
Holy fear is reverent wonder before God: humility, awe and a deep desire not to turn away from his love.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. — Proverbs 9.10

What this gift means
This gift is not terror of an unpredictable God. It is the awakening that comes when we glimpse God’s holiness, goodness and majesty and recognise that we are creatures sustained entirely by grace.
Practising it
Spend time in silent adoration. Confess honestly where you have treated God, another person or creation casually. Receive mercy and make amends where possible.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Holy fear must never be used to manipulate, threaten or keep people trapped in shame. Perfect love casts out servile fear.
Pray
Holy Spirit, fill me with reverent wonder, keep me close to God’s love and make my worship sincere.

Learning to receive the gifts
Notice
At the end of the day, recall where wisdom, courage, reverence or another gift may have been quietly needed or given.
Ask
Choose one gift and pray for it specifically during the coming week. Grace is personal, but never merely private.
Act
Take one concrete step consistent with that gift. Spiritual formation deepens when prayer becomes faithful action.
